The process of settling a healthcare claim that is normally handled by an insurance company or third party administrator to ensure the validity of the medical expense through substantiation.

“Above the Line” Deduction
A term used to describe those deductions such as HSA contributions, which the IRS allows a taxpayer to subtract from his or her gross income, regardless of whether they itemize or use the standard deduction for income taxes. A taxpayer’s gross income minus his or her above the line deductions is equal to the adjusted gross income.
