What happens to the HSA upon an accountholder's death?
Accountholders have the right at any time to designate one or more beneficiaries to whom distribution of their HSA will be made upon their death. They also have the right to revoke a prior beneficiary designation and, if desired, designate different individuals as beneficiaries. To be valid, any such beneficiary designation must be delivered to UMB on a form provided by or acceptable to UMB prior to the accountholder’s death. In the absence of a valid beneficiary designation, UMB will distribute the assets comprising the HSA upon accountholder death to their estate. In certain states, a spouse's consent may be necessary if a person other than or in addition to the spouse is named as beneficiary or to change an existing beneficiary designation. Accountholders should consult with their attorney before making such a beneficiary designation.
